Second child of Hazel Iilene (Savage) and Robert Alvahdore "Dutch" Reed, who both died of the Spanish Flu in October/November, 1918. He was raised by his maternal grandparents, Jessie Love (McCarley) and Stewart Savage in Lawrence Co., Ohio.

He married Martha Juanita Sutton, Osborn, Ohio, September 20, 1940. He served in the Navy in the South Seas during WWII.
