Came from Scotland to America with his brothers George and Mark on "Lady of the Lake" in 1842.

He married Mary Millikin in 1847. The original marriage register in Lapeer County Clerk's office reads: "This certifies that Mr. Alex Braidwood, aged 28 of Bruce, Macomb Co. & Mary Millikin aged 19 of Almont, Lapeer Co. were married in Romeo at Nathan Dickinsons, March 5th 1847 in the presence of Thos. Morton & Jas. Millikin by R.R. Kellogg, Pastor of the Romeo Cong. Church"

They farmed in Almont's Scotch Settlement community.
