Major League Baseball Player. For fifteen seasons (1959, 1964 to 1977), he was a left-handed pitcher with the Cincinnati Reds, Houston Astros, Baltimore Orioles and California Angels. Born Miguel Angel (Santana) Cuellar, he made his Major League debut on April 18, 1959 with Cincinnati and struggled in 2 games, giving up 8 runs in only 4 innings pitched. For the next four years, he remained at the Minor League level before returning to the big leagues in 1964, where he pitched in 32 games with the Cardinals' team which won the World Series that year. It was with Houston that Cuellar established himself as a quality pitcher, eventually becoming one of the elite starters in the Major Leagues. He was named to the National League All-Star Team in 1967, recording 16 victories and 203 strikeouts that season. He flourished with Baltimore, scoring four 20-or-better win seasons (1969 to 1971, 1974), and led the American League in victories with 24 and complete games with 21 in 1970. In 1969, he won 23 games and posted a 2.38 ERA while sharing the Cy Young Award with Detroit's Denny McLain. He was a member of three consecutive American League Pennant-winning teams (1969 to 1971 Orioles); including the 1970 World Champion Orioles' squad; and pitched in 6 career World Series games, posting a 2 win, 2 loss record and a 2.61 ERA, with 28 strikeouts, in 41 innings. He won the deciding game of the 1970 World Series against Cincinnati. Along with Dave McNally, Jim Palmer and Pat Dobson, Cuellar formed one of the most formidable starting rotations in baseball; as they each won 20 or more games during the 1971 season. In 453 career regular season games, he compiled a 185 win, 130 loss record, with a 3.14 lifetime ERA, in 2,808 innings pitched; earning All-Star status three additional times (1970, 1971 and 1974). He died from cancer.
