He was the son of Jeff Davis Ware and Effie Eulilia Denson. He was the husband of Audrey Iola Brown Smith and father of Avna and Oretha Ware (by his first marriage to Avna Page), and four sons by Audrey (Jimmie Henry, Howard Lloyd, Dowling Rucker, and William Rowe) and the step-father to Burnett Lester Smith and Pauline Quata Smith Hemphill).
