"Charlie" was born in Nether Hallam, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. He married Rachel Lavina Founds on 28 Apr 1910. He was one of the best toolmakers and machinists Westinghouse (PA) ever had. One time they wanted to build a giant lathe, larger than any Westinghouse had ever made, and they needed to join two huge pieces of metal together to do this. They asked Charlie how he might approach the project. He said he would drill a huge screw-type hole in one and create a giant bolt on the other and tighten them together. They said there was no way he could do that - that the tolerances would be so great, he could never make them fit together properly. He said simply, "I can do it," and they finally agreed to let him try. After many days of work, they tried to put the giant pieces together, and they fit perfectly!
