Interim Mayor of Chicago. His family relocated to Chicago from Brooklyn, New York in 1890. He attended De La Salle Institute and then in 1899 graduated from the Chicago-Kent College of Law. After being admitted to the bar, he established his legal practice. Two years later, he was assistant corporate counsel for Chicago. He subsequently became active in politics and in 1931, was elected alderman of Chicago's 17th Ward. After the current mayor, Anton Cermak, was assassinated in March of 1933, he agreed to serve as interim mayor until the General Assembly appointed Edward Kelly to take over the position. He continued to serve as alderman until his death. He was mayor for less than thirty days.
