Minnie Pearl Agnew was born on June 23, 1904 in La Casa, Stephens County, Texas. Her parents were Samuel Robert and Susan Armentia Lay Agnew.
In 1924, she married Lloyd Thomas Dopson in Texas. Lloyd and Minnie Pearl had two sons, Gaylord and Lloyd Thomas, Jr. In 1963, Lloyd and Minnie Pearl moved to Young County, Texas. Lloyd died in 1971 and was buried in Restland Cemetery in Olney, Texas.
On May 3, 1972 in Anderson County, Texas, Minnie Pearl married Lloyd's brother Benjamin C. Dopson. Benjamin died in 1977 and was also buried in Restland Cemetery in Olney, Texas.
Minnie Pearl loved to fish. Her son Gaylord, introduced her to Robert Paul Starritt, his father-in-law. Robert Paul also loved to fish and had also lost his wife. Robert Paul would travel from Olton, Texas to Olney, Texas to meet Minnie Pearl to go fishing together. They soon fell in love and was married on September 4, 1982 in Olney, Texas. Robert Paul would joke about marrying Minnie Pearl and say, "I don't know if I want to be her husband, she already has put two husbands in their graves!" He was joking with her and she would just laugh at him. She had a great sense of humor.
Minnie Pearl was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church in Olney, Texas. She was also in the Order of Eastern Star. She was a great cook and anytime she had family or friends over, she made sure she had their favorite foods cooked. She was a loving mother, wife, sister, grand-mother and great-grandmother.
Minnie Pearl, or New Granny as I called her, was my great-grandmother. My great-grandfather, Robert Paul Starritt, was her third husband. I remember that I thought Minnie Pearl would say "How-w-w-DEE-E-E-E!" like the Minnie Pearl that was on Hee-Haw and the Grand Ole Opry. The first time I talked to her on the phone she did say "How-w-w-DEE-E-E-E!" to me. When I was five, I was Robert and Minnie Pearl's flower girl at their wedding. I still have my flower basket from their wedding and the flower wreath I wore in my hair. It was special to me to be the flower girl.
Every time we would visit Robert Paul and Minnie Pearl, it was such a special time. Minnie Pearl was such a warm and loving person. She loved to collect plates from all the States she had visited. Almost all of her kitchen and dining room walls were lined with the plates. I loved to look at them and have her tell me what those places were like.
Minnie Pearl died on August 28, 1990 in Wichita Falls, Texas. She was buried at Restland Cemetery in Olney, Texas.
She was such a special woman and is missed dearly.
