US Congressman. After completing preparatory studies for law, he was admitted to the Michigan bar in 1848 and commenced practice in Saginaw. Sutherland was prosecuting attorney of Saginaw County (1848 to 1849), supervisor of Saginaw Township (1851 to 1852), a member of the State House of Representatives (1853), and judge of Michican's 10th circuit court (1863 to 1871); he was also a delegate to the State Constitutional Conventions in 1850 and 1867. Resigning from the circuit court to stand for election to the US House of Representatives, he was elected as a Democrat to the 42nd Congress but did not seek renomination in 1872. He moved to Salt Lake City the following year, resuming his law practice and serving on the faculty of the future University of Utah. Sutherland was president of the Territorial Bar Association from 1894 to 1895, but moved to California in 1897 where he lived until his death.
