Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Served in the Civil War as a Private in Company C, 17th Michigan Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at Lenoire, Tennessee on November 16, 1863. His citation reads "While color bearer of his regiment, having been twice wounded and the sight of one eye destroyed, still held to the colors until ordered to the rear by his regimental commander". His Medal was issued on July 20, 1897. He was one of 8 17th Michigan soldiers to be awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during the Civil War (the others being Private Frederick Alber, Corporal John A. Falconer, Private Andrew J. Kelley, Sergeant Daniel McFall, Corporal Irwin Shepard, Lieutenant Colonel Frederick Swift and Sergeant Charles A. Thompson).
