Christopher was the son of Rev. Thomas H. & Elizabeth (Lindsey) Prather. He served in the U.S. Army during the Civil War (34th Iowa Infantry, Companies A and K). He became a successful farmer, working near Chariton, IA. He married Mary Ellen Mace on 22 May 1856; they had 12 children, 9 of whom survived to adulthood (Nettie Stonebraker, Emily Boylan, Arthur, Fred, Dora Carson, Edna Edwards, Christopher, Myron, & Earl). He died of heart disease at the home of his daughter Emily.
