Byron "A" Smith, (no middle initial really) was killed in a kamikaze attack seven miles east of Okinawa while he was serving aboard the USS Cassin Young (DD793). He was the son of Alexander and Lula and the family lived in several states during the Depression, being in western Michigan in 1942 from where he enlisted. The hit also claimed 21 of Byron's shipmates near the starboard, foreward portion of the destroyer. The ship is now a museum ship, part of Boston National Historical Park, across the Charles River from Boston, in Charlestown, MA. It can be toured in season with park rangers and Googled via the National Park or the ship's volunteer website. A plaque listing all those killed that day is on board exactly where the plane hit.
