United States Navy Officer. John "Mad Jack" Percival was a well-known sea captain, who sailed the USS Constitution around the world. After repairing the USS Constitution, he was given an order to carry the first U.S. ambassador to Brazil to his post in Brazil. Beginning his voyage, he left New York with a 447-man crew in late May of 1844. 495 days later he circumnavigated the globe, sailing 52,370.5 miles. At the age of 65, he reached Boston in early October of 1845. He served in the United States Navy during the Quasi-War with France, the War of 1812, the campaign against West Indies pirates and the Mexican-American War.
