Civil War Union Brevet Major General General. At the beginning of the Civil War he was commissioned Captain in the 2nd New Hampshire and fought at the 1st Battle of Bull Run. Promoted Lieutenant Colonel of the 6th New Hampshire Regiment in 1862, he commanded an expedition to Elizabeth City, North Carolina, which resulted in a victory over the Confederate rendezvous. Commissioned Colonel of the 6th New Hampshire, he was in the 2nd Battle of Bull Run, at Chantilly and at Antietam. In 1863, he commanded a brigade in the 9th Army Corps at Fredericksburg and Vicksburg. Promoted Brigadier General in June 1864, he commanded corps in the battles of the Wilderness, Spottsylvania Court House and captured Confederate 1,000 prisoners with arms at Petersburg. In April 1865, he led the assault to capture General Lee's Army and for gallant conduct was brevetted a Major General. At the war's end, he declined a commission in the Regular Army and served in the New Hampshire State Legislature, 1866 to 1868.
