Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, Utah Governor. Prior to the Civil War, he was active in Republican politics in Illinois, when commissioned an officer in the Union Army. For his war service, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers in March, 1865. After the war, President Ulysses S. Grant appointed him the Governor of the Utah Territory in 1870 and he died while in office.
