Barney McBreen was the first member of the Kansas City Missouri Fire Dept. to die of injuries sustained in the line of duty. He was a member of Hook and Ladder #1, and fell eight stories from the Midland Building while drilling with Pompier Ladder. Edward Carroll was injured the mishap, and he too died of injuries sustained on the job April 28. 1891.
