John Plumbe Jr. was the first photographer to make a portrait of a sitting president, James Polk, in 1845. Others were John Quincy Adams, Dolley Madison, Daniel Webster, Martin Van Buren and John James Audubon. Prior means of creating a likeness was simply by artist and a brush.
