Wisconsin Governor. He was working as a teacher, when moved to Kenosha, Wisconsin, to teach at the Southport Academy. He also edited the Southport American newspaper, (1843-46). He was a member of the Wisconsin State Senate, (1854-58) and Wisconsin Secretary of State, (1859-62). In 1862, he was elected as a Republican the 7th Governor of Wisconsin and during his brief time in office, he was devoted to the welfare of Wisconsin's troops during the Civil War. While on a trip to inspect Wisconsin troops after the Battle of Shiloh, he slipped and fell and drowned in the Tennessee River, making his way through camp after dark.
