Obituary - Hazel Elaine Blood Ellison passed away suddenly on October 21, 1999.
She was born in Kaysville, Utah on July 3, 1911, the third child of Governor Henry H. Blood and Minnie Ann Barnes Blood.Hazel attended Davis County Schools and the University of Utah, where she graduated in 1932. At the University, she was student body secretary, a member and officer of the Chi Omega Sorority and was honored with selection to Phi Kappa Phi, Chi Delta Phi, Mortar Board, and the Beehive Honor Society. She remained active in University affairs throughout her life, serving recently as a director of the Emeritus Alumni Association, and was honored with the Emeritus Merit of Honor Award in 1979.
She married her high school and college sweetheart, David Joseph Ellison of Layton, Utah in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania on February 24, 1933. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. They spent their first two married years in New York City before returning to Salt Lake City. Their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren are the loves of their lives, and their most important accomplishment. In her later life, Hazel dedicated substantial time to the care of her family, especially including her sister Evelyn.
Her time not spent in service to her family was dedicated to building her community. Next to her calling as a spouse and mother, Hazel is best remembered as a teacher. She taught second grade in the Salt Lake City Schools for 18 years, enriching the lives of her young students through preparation and personal attention. Her excellence in teaching and her love of her students was recognized when she received Utah Teacher of the Year honors in 1972. Although she was not allowed to teach beyond the age of 65, she never retired. Instead, she became the senior citizen volunteer coordinator for the Salt Lake City Public Schools and a member of the RSVP Advisory Board of the Salt Lake County Division of Aging. Her love of children and community was also shown by her earlier involvement with the Junior League (as Salt Lake president and National Junior League vice president), and her volunteer service at the American Red Cross and the Neighborhood House.
Hazel was also noted for her custom, fresh flower wedding cakes, gracing the wedding receptions of hundreds of other families.
She is survived by her husband, David; children, David H. (Sally) of Portola Valley, California; James E. (Carole) of Washington, D.C.; Janet (Sandy Mackenzie) of San Francisco; and Thomas A. (Susan) of Salt Lake City; grandchildren David, John, Emily, Sara, Anne, Paul, Elizabeth and William and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Evelyn B. Mazuran of Salt Lake City; and sisters-in-law, Lou Jean M. Blood; Kay H. Blood; Florence Ellison; and Isabel E. Adams. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Russell H. Blood and Alan B. Blood.
Her energy remained boundless, and her capacity to love and contribute remained great, until her untimely death.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, October 26, 1999 at Parleys First Ward at 2350 South 2100 East in Salt Lake City. A viewing will take place on Monday, October 25, 1999 at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple in Salt Lake City from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and at the Parleys First Ward for one hour prior to the Funeral Service. Interment will follow at the Kaysville City Cemetery.
