Obituary - Evelyn Mazuran dies at 86 — longtime editor at News -- Evelyn Mazuran, an editor at the Deseret News for 30 years in the golden age of society pages and genteel journalism, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, due to complications from Parkinson's disease. She was 86.
Before retiring in 1976, Mrs. Mazuran helped shepherd her section of the paper from "society" to "social" concerns. She also helped usher in a new era of family and women's issues. When she retired, sports columnist Hack Miller praised her as "an accomplisher" and "a reference point" for everything from women in sports to fashion. She had a reputation for accuracy and attention to detail. Her reports from the field during fashion excursions to New York City were always popular with readers.
Former Deseret News managing editor Don Woodward said, "Evelyn brought a real touch of quality to the paper. And she was a good editor. She was also very aware of how the paper could serve the community. Her writers were very loyal to her. She was always a strong advocate for her people."
Evelyn Blood Sims Mazuran was born on Aug. 19, 1914, to the late Utah Gov. Henry H. Blood and Minnie Ann Barnes Blood. She grew up in Kaysville and graduated from the University of Utah with several honors. She taught school in Bountiful for two years before joining the Deseret News staff in 1947. After her first husband, Robert B. Sims, died, she married Paul M. Mazuran. He died in 1995.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple. Friends may call from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in the Kaysville City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Primary Children's Medical Center are suggested.
