British Nobility, Duke of Teck, 1st Marquess of Cambridge. He was born His Serene Highness Prince Adolphus Charles Alexander Albert Edward George Philip Louis Ladislaus of Teck, the eldest son of Prince Francis of Teck and Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge, and younger brother of Mary of Teck, who became Queen Mary. Due to his abnormally long string of names, he was commonly called "Dolly" by his family. Educated at Wellington College, he then attended the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst. He served with the 17th Lancers, his uncle's regiment, before transferring to the 1st Life Guards in 1894. With this regiment he served in the Boer War. In October of 1894 he married Lady Margaret Grosvenor, and they had four children. He succeeded his father as Duke of Teck in 1900, but renounced that title during World War I when the royal family dropped all Germanic titles. He adopted the surname of Cambridge in honour of his grandfather Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge. He also dropped the title of His Highness and was created the 1st Marquess of Cambridge. Adolphus died at Shatton Hall, Shrewesbury at the age of 59.
