Kansas Governor. After graduating from Washburn University of Topeka, she served on the staff of former U.S. Senator Frank Carlson in Washington, D.C. and Topeka offices, (1953-69). She was commissioner of elections of Shawnee County, (1970-72), worked as administrative assistant to the Mayor of Topeka, (1973-74) and was acting director of the Topeka Housing Authority. In addition, she was Kansas State Treasurer, (1974-86). In 1991, she was elected as a Democrat the 42nd Governor of Kansas, serving until 1995. In addition to being the State of Kansas's first female Governor, she also was Kansas' oldest Governor, taking office at age 65 and Kansas' first Roman Catholic Governor.
