Thirteenth President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1952 President Dwight David Eisenhower appointed Ezra Taft Benson to the cabinet post of Secretary of Agriculture, temporarily being released from his duties as an Apostle while still serving in this capacity. Through his service for our country many nations have been opened up to the gospel by the example he set to their leaders. In 1973 Benson was set apart as president of the Council of the Twelve Apostles. At eighty-six years of age he became the second oldest man to succeed to the presidency. He is most noted for his counsel to all church members to read and study the Book of Mormon. Although the 13th President of the Church he is only the second Church president to be buried outside of Utah.
