Bowden, 80, Norfolk Attorney

Norfolk-Henry Bowden, 80, of 702 Redgate Ave., an attorney long identified with civic activities, died Thursday night in a Norfolk hospital.

Born in Norfolk, he was a son of George Edwin and Mrs. Ellen Evangeline Jones Bowden, His father once was clerk of the U.S. Court's Eastern District. He was the husband of Mrs.
Katherine Bruce Bowden.

He graduated from Hampden-Sydney College and the University of Virginia Law School.

In July 1903 he began the practice of law in Norfolk and served as first assistant director of Public Safety under Adm. A. O. Dillingham and former City Manager Charles Ashburner. He also served on the Police and Fire Trial Boards.

He was a member of the Norfolk-Portsmouth Bar Association and the past president of the Norfolk Chapter of Sons of the American Revolution. He was a captain in the Virginia Reserve Military in 1943

He also was a member of Ruth Masonic Lodge, 89, Royal Arch Chapter 1, Grice Commandery, Khedive Temple of the Shrine and past manager of it's band, and past exalted ruler of Norfolk Elks Lodge 38.

Besides his widow, surviving are two sons, Henry Bowden Jr. of the Air Force and Bruce Bowden of Norfolk; a sister, Mrs. Ralph Fletcher; and three grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held today at 3:30 p.m. in H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments by the Rev. Beverly Tucker White of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, of which he was a member. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. The family suggest that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Boys Home in Covington.
