Musician. Born Sheldon Manne in New York City, he was a versatile jazz drummer known as the man with the golden arm. His first professional job with a known big band was with the Bobby Byrne Orchestra in 1940. When the bebop craze started to change the jazz sound in the mid 1940, he rose to stardom working in bands with Woody Herman and Stan Kenton. In the early 1950s, he relocated to the west coast where he performed in the Los Angeles jazz scene with artist Shorty Rogers, Art Pepper, Russ Freeman, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Chet Baker and many more. He also made a countless number of records, plus sound tracks for television and feature films. Two weeks before his sudden death of a heart attack, he was honored by the City of Los Angeles with a "Shelly Manne Day".
