Political Activist. Co-founder of the militant African-American activist group called the Black Panther Party. Born in Louisiana, Newton's family moved to Oakland when he was young. In 1966, he co-founded the Black Panther Party with fellow activist Bobby Seale in Oakland, and would remain the leader until 1973. Although the party set up free clinics and food distributing sites, and strived to end drug use in African-American neighborhoods, their militant attitude and habits of monitoring police officers lead to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's targeting of the group under their COINTELPRO program designed to eradicate dissident groups. After infiltrating the group and starting several inter-party rivalvries, the FBI's interference and flaring egos caused the group to fall apart. Newton himself had fled to Cuba in 1973, to avoid facing trial for the murder of a prostitute. He later died in Oakland at age 47, after being shot in an argument with a drug dealer.
