Football Coach. He will go down in history as the most successful football coach (Soccer) in Ukraine and the former Soviet Union; he is ranked 8th in the world's greatest mangers by ESPN. He led Dynamo Kiev to 5 league titles and 2 Cup Winners' Cups between 1974 and 1986. He guided Soviet Union to runners-up spot in 1988 European Championships. He returned to Kiev for 3rd spell and took them to 5 consecutive league titles 1996 to 2001. He became Ukraine coach in 1999, took Dynamo to the Champions' League semi-final. He died during brain surgery, following complications suffered after a stroke. Following his death Lobanovsky was awarded the title "Hero of Ukraine" the nation's highest honor. The Dynamo stadium in Kiev was also renamed the Valeriy Lobanovsky Dynamo Stadium in his honor. In 2005, the Valeriy Lobanovsky Memorial Tournament was established.
