Actor. Born James Emil Coco, he was a popular character player noted for his comedic roles on stage, film and television. At age 17, he toured with a children's theatre troupe and made his Broadway debut in the play "Hotel Paradiso" in 1957. A veteran of more than 700 stage productions, he was the recipient of the Obie Award and the Drama Desk Award for outstanding performance. For feature films, he appeared in "Ensign Pulver" (1964), ""Generation" (1969), "The Wild Party" (1975), "Wholly Moses" (1980), "Hunk" (1987), among others. He also had great success on many TV series such as "The Love Boat", "Calucci's Department", "The Dumplings", "Fantasy Island", "Alice" and "St. Elsewhere", for which he won an Emmy Award. He died of a heart attack at age 56.
