US Congressman. He graduated from Schenectady's Union College in 1818, studied law, attained admission to the bar, and practiced in Kingston. Van Buren was also involved in several businesses, including the Ulster County Bank and the New York and Erie Railroad. A Democrat, he served in the New York State Assembly in 1831, and was Judge of the Ulster County Court from 1836 to 1841. In 1840 he won election to a seat in the US House of Representatives and served one term, 1841 to 1843. During his term Van Buren was Chairman of the Committee on Expenditures in the Department of State. After his Congressional term ended he returned to Kingston, where he practiced law until his death, also serving as Ulster County District Attorney from 1846 to 1850. (John Van Buren of Kingston is sometimes confused with the son of President Martin Van Buren. President Van Buren's son John (1810-1866) was also active in New York's Democratic Party, but never resided in Kingston, served as a Judge, or was elected to Congress.)
