U.S. Diplomat. He served as High Commissioner to the Philppines, 1929-1942 and was a Delegate to the United Nations following World War II. In 1933, Sayre left Harvard University's law faculty for the State Department and where he picked Alger Hiss to be his assistant. Later, Hiss would be put on trial for perjury after being accused of being a spy. In 1913, Sayre married Jesse Wilson, the daughter of then President Woodrow Wilson. Their son Francis B. Sayre Jr. served as the Episcopal dean of the Washington National Cathedral.
