US Congressman, Tennessee Governor, US Senator. Elected to represent Tennessee in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1879 to 1881. Served as Governor of Tennessee from 1887 to 1891. Elected as a Senator from Tennessee to the United States Senate, serving from 1907 until his death in office in 1912. Originally buried in Knoxville's Old Gray Cemetery, he was later re-interred in Johnson City, Tennessee.
