19th New York Governor. Before establishing a political career, he served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the New York State Militia. He was Sheriff of Ontario County, New York, president of the village of Canandaigua, and served as a member of the New York State Senate. In 1854, he was elected as a Republican the 19th Governor of New York, serving until 1857. During tenure, construction was initiated on the Albany Bridge and a prohibition bill was sanctioned. After leaving office, he lived in retirement until his death at age 85.
