U.S. Congressman. Born in Racine, Wisconsin, he attended Wisconsin State Teachers College and was a teacher for a while. He graduated from the Marquette University Law School in 1923, admitted to the bar and commenced the practice of law in Racine, Wisconsin. During World War I, he served as a First Lieutenant in the 125th Infantry, 32nd Division, US Army, (1917-19). After the war, he resumed his law practice and was active in local politics. In 1941, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-seventh Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Stephen Bolles, was reelected to the Seventy-eighth and to the next seven succeeding Congresses, serving until his death. He died of a heart attack at age 65 in Washington, D.C.
