U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the Royal Pharmacy in Potsdam, immigrated to the United States in 1866, settled in Wisconsin, in 1867 and engaged in the drug business. He was the Wisconsin State Treasurer, (1878-82), elected as a Republican to the Forty-seventh Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving (1881-89). After leaving Congress, he was appointed by President Harrison consul general at Mexico City, serving (1890-93) and appointed by President McKinley consul general at Frankfort, Germany, serving (1898-1910). In 1910, he was appointed by President Taft consul general at Cape Town, Africa and served until his death at age 67.
