Velma "Toots" Barringer, 92, of rural Tower Hill, died Monday, February 12, 2007 at 3:08 p.m. in Pana Community Hospital. She was born August 29, 1914 in Dollville, Illinois, the daughter of Anthony Brenten and Rachel Ellen Mills Mathias. Velma was a 1931 graduate of Tower Hill High School, and lived her entire life in Dollville her entire life. She was a homemaker and farm wife, and her family and her home were her life. Velma was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Dollville, where she was a member of the Church Guild and Women's Club She was also a member of the Shelby County Home Extension and a retired Senior Volunteer.
Velma married Clarence Barringer on February 25, 1933. He preceded her in death in 1987.
She is survived by her son: James W. Barringer, Tower Hill, IL; 7 grandchildren: Vicki Goriszewski, Barbara Young, Barry Brunken, Bonnie Hajny, Lynette Barringer, Brent Barringer, and Michael Barringer; 14 great grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren; and sister: Marguerite McNeese, Shelbyville, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Jean Ellen Brunken; and 3 brothers: Garvin "Bill" Mathias, Edwin F. Mathias, and A.B. Mathias, Jr.
Visitation will be held Thursday, February 15, 2007 from 10:00-11:00 a.m. in McCracken-Dean Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 15, 2007 in McCracken-Dean Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jim Hibbett officiating. Burial will be in Tower Hill Cemetery.
