The City of Bologna erected the Respighi sarcophagus in granite, in a faux-archaic style resembling old tombs nearby. The composer's name can be faintly glimpsed near the top. It rests on a bed of flat stones that were taken from an Ancient Roman road, a tribute to the finale of Respighi's "The Pines of Rome" - "The Pines of the Appian Way".
