U.S. Presidential Cabinet Member. Towards the end of World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was a pilot in training when the war ended. He then was his brother started the Blount Brothers Contractor Company, in 1946. Blount was appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson to the National Citizens Committee for Community Relations, in 1964, plus was elected President of the Alabama Chamber of Commerce and President of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in 1968. In 1969, he was appointed by President Richard Nixon Postmaster General, serving until 1972, as the first director of the new U.S. Postal Service and he was the last to hold the position of Cabinet level Postmaster General. After his term, he ran an unsuccessful campaign for the U.S. Senate and returned to his contractor company. He also founded the Winton M. Blount Center for Postal Studies and the Winton M. Blount Research Center which are both at the Smithsonian National Museum in Washington, D.C.
