U.S. Congressman. He moved to Missouri Territory in 1817, later entered the ministry and was a pastor of a church in Washington County, Pennsylvania, (1843-51). Moving to Oregon in 1852, he settled in Eugene, engaged in agricultural pursuits and was superintendent of the public schools for Lane County, in 1859. In 1865, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-ninth Congress, serving until 1867. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he engaged in agricultural pursuits, also preached, lectured and wrote for periodicals until his death.
