U.S. Senator. He graduated from Duquesne College in 1846, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1849 and commenced to practice law in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Moving to Minnesota in 1852, he engaged in the practice of in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was judge of the first judicial district (1858-64) and also served as Second Lieutenant of the Stillwater Frontier Guards, during the Dakota Indian War of 1862. He was elected an associate justice of the Minnesota State Supreme Court serving 1864-74, and was chief justice of that court in 1875. In 1875, he was elected as a Republican to the U.S. States Senate, serving until 1887. Not seeking re-election, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
