Singer. He was a Ukrainian-born operatic bass singer who was the principal bass singer for the Berlin Opera Company in the 1920s, being very successful. After visiting the United States on tour, he decided to stay. He performed with the Chicago Civic Opera Company from 1924 to 1932 and the New York Metropolitan Opera from 1939 to 1946. He was considered one of the best bass singers of his time and was known for his distinctive voice and interpretations of Wagner and Russian operas. After his retirement from the Metropolitan after a 30-year performing career, he taught privately and at the Juilliard School of Music and the New York College of Music. Born in a Jewish ghetto, he learned music and sang in synagogues before entering the Warsaw Conservatory at age 19. He became an American citizen in 1931, following his marriage to an American. He recorded several CDs.
