U.S. Congressman. He graduated from State Teachers College, in 1935, taught chemistry at Chisholm High School (1937-39) and was assistant county superintendent of schools of St. Louis County, (1939-41). He was a member of the Minnesota State Senate, (1940-44) and served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Air Corps, being awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Air Medal, during World War II. After the war, he was elected as a Democrat to the Eightieth Congress and reelected to the next thirteen succeeding Congresses, serving (1947-74). Declining not to be a candidate for reelection, he was an environmental and economic development consultant until death at age 80.
