U.S. Congressman. Born in Tipperary, Ireland, he immigrated to America with his father, settled in New Jersey in 1845 and was engaged in private businesses by 1862. He was a member of the board of aldermen of Elizabeth, New Jersey in 1878, a member of the New Jersey State House of Assembly, (1879-82), studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1882 and commenced practice law in Elizabeth. In 1893, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-third Congress, serving until 1895. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 68 in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
