US Congressman. Born in in Ridgefield, Connecticut, he clerked in a stores in Norwalk, and New York City, then moved to Newark, New Jersey, in 1836. There he engaged in the manufacture of clothing business, was a member of the New Jersey State House of Assembly, (1850, 1856) and served as a member of the common council in 1852. In 1861, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-seventh and Thirty-eighth Congresses, serving until 1865. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his former manufacturing pursuits and was Mayor of Newark in 1873. He died at age 65 in Newark, New Jersey.
