US Congressman. A journalist, he became the managing editor of the Newark, New Jersey "Daily Advertiser" in 1898 after working for a number of New York City, New York newspapers. After four years at that position he served as an advertising company executive until 1902, when New Jersey Governor Franklin Murphy asked him to investigate tenement housing conditions in Newark and other metropolitan areas. This led him to become a Tenement-House Supervision board member, which then saw him become a member of New Jersey Governor Edward C. Stokes staff for four years. In 1909 he founded an insurance company and would also serve as New Jersey Republican State Committee secretary for five years. In 1914 he ran for Congress, and was elected as a Republican to represent New Jersey's 8th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives. He served from 1915 to 1919, and declined to run in 1918 for his Representative seat so he could campaign for the United States Senate. He lost in the Republican Primary to incumbent New Jersey Governor Walter E. Edge, who eventually won the seat. Edward W. Gray ran for Representative again in 1924 and for the Senate in 1928, losing both times. He died in Newark in 1942 at the age of 71.
