US Senator, Wyoming Governor. He graduated from Yale University in 1900, moved to Careyhurst, Wyoming, then engaged in the raising of livestock and agricultural pursuits. He was into banking, was a member of the Progressive National Committee for Wyoming, (1912-16) and chairman of the Wyoming State Highway Commission, (1917-18). He was president of the Wyoming Stock Growers’ Association (1917-21), when elected as a Republican the 11th Governor of Wyoming in 1919, serving until 1923 and was appointed by President Calvin Coolidge in 1924, as chairman of the agricultural conference to investigate the agricultural situation in the United States. In 1930, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Francis E. Warren, serving until 1937. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed his agricultural pursuits and ranching, until his death at age 58.
