Composer, Lyricist. Best known for the song "As Time Goes By," immortalized in the film score of "Casablanca," Hupfeld was the son of a church organist, and began his musical career as a saxophonist in the United States Navy Band during World War I. In addition to the Princeton fight song "Here Comes That Tiger", he composed music for a few minor films in the early 1930s. His masterpiece, "As Time Goes By," was written in 1931 for the Broadway musical "Everybody's Welcome," and was popularized by Rudy Vallee and other singers in the decade prior to the filming of the Bogart-Bergman classic. A lifelong resident of Montclair, New Jersey, Hupfeld's success enabled him to build a spacious home there in 1935, where he entertained stars like Bing Crosby and Mae West. After his death at age 57, he was buried in his hometown following a funeral service at the church where his mother, Fredericka, had served as organist.
