Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Leacroft, near Leeds, England, he served as a Private in the 8th Regiment Light Dragoons, British Army. On June 17, 1858, Private Pearson was part of a small force which attacked the town of Gwalior, India. He charged through the enemy camp with others, under a heavy converging fire, was wounded by a sword-cut and returned with two captured guns. For gallantry in this action, he was awarded the Victoria Cross by Lieutenant General Sir Henry Somerset, on June 18, 1859 and later achieved the rank of Sergeant. In 1880, he emigrated to Canada and settled on a farm. He died at age 67 in Ontario, Canada.
