Author. He wrote and published over 100 novels and stories in his lifetime, and gained both acclaim and scorn for writing in the Dutch language during a time when only French was acceptable for literature. His best known work was 1838's "De Leeuw van Vlaenderen, of de Slag der Gulden Sporen" (The Lion of Flanders, or the Battle of the Golden Spurs), a historical novel that takes place during the 1297-1305 Franco-Flemish War.
