New Hampshire Governor. A member of the Republican Party, he served as the state of New Hampshire's governor from 1969 until 1973. He was educated at William & Mary and the University of New Hampshire before his studies yielded to his service with the US Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. Upon returning home, he attained his BA from Dartmouth College and following graduation worked as a special education teacher. In 1948 along with his father and brother, he founded The Peterson, Inc., Real Estate Group and began his political career as a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives (1961 to 1969), serving as majority leader from 1963 to 1963 and house speaker (1965 to 1968). During his tenure as governor, Peterson prioritized his efforts in building a state surplus. Following his governorship, he served as president of Franklin Pierce College for 20 years. He died from lung cancer.
