US Senator. He graduated from Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., in 1934, from the University of Michigan Law School in 1937, was admitted to the bar in 1938 and commenced the practice of law in Detroit, Michigan. During World War II, he served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the 4th Infantry, United States Army and was wounded on D-Day at Utah Beach in Normandy, France. After the war, he was a Michigan Corporation Securities Commissioner, State director of the Office of Price Stabilization, United States District Attorney of the Eastern Michigan District, legal adviser to the Governor of Michigan, and Lieutenant Governor. In 1958, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving until his death from cancer at age 64.
