Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Private in Company E, 90th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He attained the rank of First Sergeant. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action at Antietam, Maryland on September 17, 1862. His citation reads "Under a most withering and concentrated fire, voluntarily picked up the colors of his regiment, when the bearer and two of the color guard had been killed, and bore them aloft throughout the entire battle."
